October 8, 2001, Post from Guy of the Diaspora team from the Diaspora Hub-Forums at: http://www.diaspora-hub.f2s.com/phpBB/ : -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The first thing to say is that we are hoping to have Diaspora up and running as soon as we can. The server was hit by a hacker and we've had to keep it offline for a while to fix it.
The website being down was an ISP problem which they still haven't sorted out. Portland, the ISP, lost 120,000 websites when someone hacked their servers. Their website is still having problems and they are not returning calls to change the password on the site - and there is no point relaunching the website until they have sorted out their own problems with password security.
The wider issue is that Diaspora costs us a lot of money to run, and as a small company we just don't have the resources to keep the levels of committment to the game which we have done in the past (and before anyone laughs, that has included 2 servers, code updates, and a full-time member of staff looking after user queries).
Where we are now is that we are working to sort out the structure of the company at the moment, and how to get cash in to sort this all out. It has been a total nightmare which has resulted in Altitude getting rid of all overheads to try to keep Diaspora alive. The plan, of course, is to keep it going. Plans in this environment are not that easy to implement.
